White sneakers look amazing for about two weeks in India. Then the dust, the rain, and the general chaos of Indian streets turn them into a sad shade of grey-brown. But do not panic — with stuff you already have at home, you can get them looking fresh again.
What You Need
- An old toothbrush (soft bristles)
- Baking soda (available at any grocery store)
- White vinegar or lemon juice
- Dish soap (Vim or similar)
- Microfibre cloth or old cotton t-shirt
- Warm water
- Optional: whitening toothpaste (Colgate or similar)
For Leather Sneakers (AF1, Stan Smith, etc.)
- Remove laces (wash them separately with soap)
- Mix a small amount of dish soap with warm water
- Dip the toothbrush and gently scrub the leather in circular motions
- For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda + water and apply it. Let it sit 10 minutes
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth, then dry with a dry cloth
- Air dry in the shade — never in direct sunlight (it yellows white leather)
For Canvas Sneakers (Converse, Vans)
- Make a paste: 2 tablespoons baking soda + 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- Apply the paste all over the canvas with the toothbrush
- Let it sit for 30 minutes
- Scrub gently, then rinse with cold water
- For extra whitening, add a squeeze of lemon juice to the paste
- Air dry completely before wearing
For Yellowed Midsoles
This is the toughest problem. Midsoles yellow due to oxidation, and it is hard to fully reverse. But here is what helps:
- Apply whitening toothpaste to the midsole with a toothbrush
- Scrub thoroughly, then wipe clean
- For serious yellowing, mix baking soda + hydrogen peroxide (from any medical store) into a paste
- Apply to the sole, wrap in cling film, and leave in sunlight for 2-3 hours
- Remove and wipe clean
Prevention is Better
- Apply a water and stain repellent spray before first wear
- Wipe your shoes after every wear — 30 seconds prevents hours of deep cleaning
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Use shoe trees or stuff with newspaper to maintain shape
With these methods, you can keep your white sneakers looking fresh through India's toughest conditions. No expensive cleaning kits needed — your kitchen has everything you need.
