You just dropped ₹15,000 on a pair of sneakers. The last thing you want is for them to look wrecked after two weeks. India's weather — dust, rain, humidity — is especially tough on shoes. Here is your complete sneaker care guide.
Daily Maintenance
After every wear, give your sneakers a quick wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. This takes 30 seconds and removes surface dust before it sets in. Keep a dedicated cloth near your shoe rack — make it a habit.
Deep Cleaning
For a proper clean, you need: a soft brush (old toothbrush works), mild soap or sneaker cleaning solution, lukewarm water, and microfibre cloths. Remove the laces and insoles first. Dip the brush in soapy water and gently scrub in circular motions. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, then air dry.
For White Sneakers
Mix baking soda with white vinegar into a paste. Apply with a toothbrush, let it sit for 15 minutes, then wipe off. This works brilliantly on white leather and rubber midsoles. For yellowed soles, try wrapping them in plastic with salon-grade hydrogen peroxide and leaving in sunlight for 2-3 hours.
For Suede and Nubuck
Never use water on suede. Get a dedicated suede brush and eraser. Brush in one direction to restore the nap. For stains, the suede eraser works like a pencil eraser — gentle pressure, back and forth. Always apply suede protector spray before first wear.
Indian Weather Protection
- Monsoon season: Apply waterproof spray before the rains start. Keep silica gel packets in your shoes to absorb moisture after wearing
- Summer dust: Stuff shoes with newspaper after wearing to absorb sweat. Clean soles weekly
- Humidity: Store shoes in a cool, dry place. Avoid closed shoe cabinets without ventilation — fungus loves that environment
Storage Tips
If you are storing sneakers long-term, stuff them with acid-free tissue paper to maintain shape. Keep them in their original box or clear drop-front containers. Throw in a silica gel packet. And never, ever store them in plastic bags — they need airflow.
When Not to Clean
Some sneakerheads believe in a lived-in look. If you are wearing everyday beaters, a bit of character is fine. But your special pairs? Treat them with respect. They will last years longer.
